Flag variables relating to cape
If I understand the documentation correctly, if I type CPOS SBSI, I will see a display of CAPE based on a surface based parcel. If I type CPOS MUSI, I will see a display of CAPE based on the most unstable parcel. Why then tonight am I seeing CPOS SBSI values of 1200-1600 over central North Carolina ...

I haven't had any luck with the 40km files, but on the FTPPRD site, I simply download the 80km file(about 1.5mb), and then use the import grib function in DAWS. Here is the path on the FTP site: ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/ruc/prod/ruc2a.20050705/ The file name for this hour is ruc2...

Scripts for computing Thickness values from RUC
Does anyone know of a way to use scripting to perform calculations on a RUC file? For instance, I have successfully imported the RUC analysis grib file for a given hour. Within that file, the geopotential height at many isobaric levels can be selected. But suppose I want to compute a thickness value...

Geostrophic wind and Ageostrophic wind reversed?
I was just looking at today's GFS run in PCGRIDDS, and used the command "AGEO" to display the 300mb ageostrophic wind. Much to my surprise, it was westerly, looking much like what I would have expected to see if plotting the Geostrophic Wind. Since winds are usually subgeostrophic in a tro...

Ensembles
Had anyone had any luck with displaying ensemble data in PCGRIDDS? I have tried downloading each ensemble perturbation separately, but when processing the data, only the first member is recognized and the others are ignored. I am specifically interested in being able to overlay all the ensemble memb...

Macros involving time differences
I would like to write a macro that enables me to display time differences in different fields, such as pres and hght. I know I could write a very long macro with many lines such as "hght tdif fhrs 00 03", "hght tdif fhrs 03 06", and so on. There has to be a better way. I did noti...

Vector Subtraction
I was wondering if there is a way to display a storm relative isentropic analysis. Many papers have indicated that simply doing pressure advection on an isentropic surface is not terribly helpful, especially if the system has a significant translational speed, which most winter systems do. I would l...

Blank Screen When Starting PCGRIDDS
Has anyone had a problem where upon starting PCGRIDDS, the colored bars appear on the screen, but there is no text? In other words, no drop down menus and no data files to select. The only solution I have found is to keep opening the program over and over again until it finally works. I am running W...

Buoy Data
Another issue is that when retrieving buoy data from Albany, the url used refers to the synoptic hour and not the current hour. Thus, at 14z, you download the 14z metars and the 12z buoys! I edited the URL so that it too was looking at the current hour, and the download went fine. But as has been no...

GFDL in PCGRIDDS
Craig,
Try modifying the gribmodl.dat file in the grib directory. Just add model type 70 to the end of the list, and call it something like GFD. I just tried it and it worked fine. Let me know if you have any trouble.
