Lionair B737 Undershoot RW09 Bali 13 April 2013

Post by Peter Creswick »

Official sources and credible expat resident of 20 years say conditions were fine, sunny, light winds, generally benign.
Other ground sources say cloudbase 1,700 feet, light SE winds with rain showers.
Expat passenger said approach was normal, in fine and sunny weather, then they entered sudden heavy rain and darkness, then ditched.
Pilots apparently have told investigators first lost sight of runway and PAPI then heavy rain, commenced go around, but aircraft sink rate increased.

I smell a microburst.
Has anyone done a weather analysis yet ?

I agree that it looks like a microburst. I could not locate a temperature profile for that time & location. I could only find PIBAL (wind) data. But if anyone has a complete profile, I'll run a sounding.
