Something is going on here...Metars/SYNOPS...

Post by mrwx »

Have not change anything in my data retrieval set up for 1-2 years, working solid, no issues at all, just look at my TL on twitter....but yesterday, things began acting weird, data was sparse, Canadian Metar data-hardly any METARS, few SYNOPS, only MADIS coming in reliably. Even the current front plotting is old, did NECEP change something? Even if I look closely at the US data (METARS) there should be way more, anyone notice this?

Never mind, I think it's related to this at NCEP/WPC - issues with data

Fronts: URL we had with the word "origin" in it is no longer used by NWS.
Now use command line: download,http://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/discussions/codsus_hr,c:\[where you store it on your own drive]

Canadian surface data. Yeah, it's not been coming through on all the surface data sites I've tried (Albany, NWS, etc.). It must be a problem in the data feed from Canadian weather source to all the US sources in our list. I really do hope it is fixed/restored soon!

Thanks Wally, have updated the current front bulletin URL, works now. Still hoping the Canadian data kicks in soon.

Thanks again,

I've checked a number of university sites (even UCAR!) and other non-governmental sites, and they are not getting the Canadian stations either. But, the NWS is happily issuing surface charts plotting all the Canadian metar data. So, apparently, the NWS is getting the Canadian feed, but either their equipment has gone faulty in forwarding it, or they're intentionally restricting the data (them or Canada). I kinda doubt the latter, since even African and European weather agencies are freely sharing basic metar data. The kicker is, that the data has been missing now for a rather long time.
