Soundings problem

Post by Tickford »

Hi,

Just wondering if there is any particular issue with soundings ? No matter what WMO I enter (tried different ones all over the world) I keep getting a "No SKEW-T data found" message. They are all valid WMO numbers that I'm using and I've made sure that the upper-level data has been downloaded.

Am I doing something wrong here ??

Thanks

If you have the i patch there should be no problems. I just loaded up some sounding data from Scripps and displayed the sounding for 94866 (Melbourne International) without any troubles.

Yeah, I just tried Melbourne too and it worked.... The Sydney one (94767) doesn't though. Is this due to Sydney not having this facility ? I'd have thought not considering I am able to get a sounding for Sydney on the Bureau of Meterology website and considering it is a rather major Aussie city

Anyone know if it's possible to get a sounding for Sydney though DA ?

Thanks
Weasel

Try 94776, this is for William AFB just to the NE of Newcastle, or about 80 NE of Sydney...I think this is as close as you'll get:( Are you certain they do balloons in Sydney?

It's often helpful to plot a 500 mb chart, drag across the station you want, select File > Quality Control, and see what WMO # it is showing. Then you can use this in the SKEW-T dialog.

Maybe I should add a dropdown box in the sounding module so one can pick & choose the station.

That dropdown box sounds like a great idea Tim

It's been added and will appear in V1.0j, probably to be released tonight.

The dropdown box is great Tim. One problem though......

When I try to use Sydney (94767) I get a message saying "Digital Atmosphere encountered an error: Range check error"

All other soundings I tried worked fine, even small country towns in Australia. Just Sydney that gives this error.

Any ideas ??

Thanks

This problem stems from the fact that Sydney reports only wind data. I have corrected Digital Atmosphere to not perform stability calculations if temperature data is missing.
