Red and blue station plots, circles and squares

Post by Tim Vasquez »

Q. I used to be a meteorologist and am teaching my 8 yr old son's class tomorrow. On your US surface maps - featured on weather roanoake and other sites - for the surface stations what do the colors (blue and red) signify? And why are some stations square and some round?

Blue colors signify MVFR (marginal VFR), ceilings below 3000 and/or vis below 5 mile
Red colors signify IFR, ceilings below 1000 and/or vis below 3 miles

Round station plots are assumed to be from human observers.
Square station plots are assumed to be from automated stations (for example, when AUTO, A02, etc is carried in the remarks).
