Personal Weather Station--how to import data

Post by mlewis73 »

I have a personal weather station that I use to post data to the internet.

Is there a way that Digital Atmosphere can import my station's observations in addition to standard METARs? I'm using Virtual Weather Station to post my data to the internet.

Thank you,
Mike

Hi Mike,

I think the data from your station must first be converted to METAR format so DA WS can understand it. This software performs this funtion for you: http://69.57.153.239/bin/encoder.exe You have to type the information in, so it isn't automatic.

Actually, several weather station software options can generate metar automatically - VWS (Virtual...) and Weather Display (the latter makes better graphs IMO).

Then you have to create an entry in your digatmos.stn file, use an ID not used by any other station, and put in your station as a phantom station - latitude/longitude, elevation, your phantom ID, etc., recompile tables, and use your scripting to go get your metar uploaded to your site. That would assume you set up your wx station software to upload the metars to YOUR SITE.

I've been doing this with DA and DAWS for years (at http://www.weatherroanoke.com) for my mid-Atlantic map. And I've had other stations in the area creating metars so that I can ingest them along with the NOAA reports. Right now, I think I'm adding about four stations - had six going at one time.
