Grib ingest/plot software?

Post by britbob »

Can anyone recommend some reasonable software that can ingest and plot grib model data? The sticking point, it`s for a windows machine as I`m running W2K pro on my home pc. Even better if the learning curve is not too steep. My brain can only take in so much at a time!! Ideally, I would like to use some of the results on a website.

Grib ingest/plot software

Dear Britbob:

There is a very useful software program available, and it is free. It is even available through a link here. It is PCGRIDDS 32. You can find it at Jeff Krob's website. Just check in the PCGRIDDS 32 section and the link is there in Jeff's latest posting. You will need to download and install the whole version 3.0. It does not download the data for you. I do that downloading each file to My Documents, (as you can guess, I'm running Windows, also. XP version, though), then I move each file manually to the GRIB/NWS folder. Then just hit the command to convert NWS grib to PCGRIDDS 32 data. There are a great many pre-prepared analysis charts to choose from, and if you want something different, there is the Command Line which allows you to have exactly which charts you desire. The learning curve is not that steep, either, due to the excellent documentation provided. If you need a site for grib data, check out the NCEP Nomads 5 site. Hope this helps you.

Cordially,

I still haven`t got around to looking at pcgridds. I`m still busy battling with gempak on my machine

Would you do me a favour and mail me a couple of sample images? Maybe a couple of analysis charts, some model data etc. My email is upto date in my profile. I just want to get a flavour for what the software can do :)

Thanks.

Not yet. It`s not Gempak that is causing so much a problem, but my Linux install. I`m using Mandrake 10, but I`m finding trying to execute any of the Gempak products requires one lib after another. Apparantly it`s called dependancy hell among the linux community.

I gave up after spending a several days installing one rpm, then another then another. I might try again when I get some free time over the Christmas break.
