Bufkit Help

Greetings:

I just downloaded Bufkit after hearing about it online. The download and install are done sucessfully, but now I need a helpful mentor to get it tailored to my location. I have version 4.4, build 48, and the documentation that was on the NOAA website was for 3.5, so I am somewhat disconcerted and unsure of how to proceed.
Anybody out there willing and able to take my hand and lead me out of the woods of confusion?

Hoping for help,
Carl Sidor

Carl,

What are you having problems with, specifically?

Bufkit help

Dear Ben:

Thank you for responding so quickly. I have Bufkit installed, but the Bufget4 part doesn't seem to want to appear. The link shows up on my all programs list(windows XP), but when I click on it I get a dialog box stating that windows doesn't know how to open the program. I was able to open the program in Notepad, and made the three option choices, but nothing further happened. I am a total newbie as far as programing is concerned, and I don't know what to do next. I am afraid of goofing things up if I proceed further without guidance. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. If you wish, you may e-mail me at csidor@hotmail.com

Cordially,
Carl Sidor

Hi Carl,

I've used the same version of Bufkit that you downloaded a number of times. I found that in order to get BUFGET to function properly, you have to install what's called "TCL/TK," a programming language, on your computer. There's a link to this on the Bufkit website, but the link isn't any good anymore, so you might try doing a google search nd see what you come up with. You should be able to download TCL/TK for free. I'm going to see if I can track down this file on my computer and e-mail it to you, but I'm running Windows ME, so my version might not be compatible with XP...

Regards,
Marc

Hi Carl,

Here are a couple of websites where you can download either the TCL or TK language. It appears that Bufget is written in TK.

TK:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/tcl/tk846-src.zip

TCL:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/tcl/tcl846-src.zip

Hope that helps! :)

Dear MarcC:

I want to bear your children! Seriously, thank you very much for the tip on the language, and for the links. I downloaded the language and installed it. There was a small snag because I had deleted the proxy server address in the belief that since I had entered 0 for no proxy server, the address was not necessary. Apparently, windows expects to find the address there even if it is not needed. After replacing the address, and trying again, mirabile dictu BUFGET appeared. My joy knows no bounds! Thanks again. However, Marc, Ben, don't go too far, as I think I feel some more questions coming on...

Cordially,
Carl Sidor

Oh, don't worry, I never stray too far from my computer....

One thing I use BUFGET for is a quick grab of web images. My Aviation Meteorology class is 2 hours on Monday afternoon, so my friends and I generally do our forecasts instead of listening to Beechjet stories. I use BUFGET to grab all of the model images real quick (just type the URL of the image instead of the sounding... i.e. http://www.weather.unisys.com/eta/12h/eta_prec_12.gif) and you can snag whatever you want very quickly. I'm sure this would also work for text and html stuff too. Making the most of resources is fun. 8)
