Geostrophic wind and Ageostrophic wind reversed?

Post by Greg Fishel »

I was just looking at today's GFS run in PCGRIDDS, and used the command "AGEO" to display the 300mb ageostrophic wind. Much to my surprise, it was westerly, looking much like what I would have expected to see if plotting the Geostrophic Wind. Since winds are usually subgeostrophic in a trof, I would have expected to see an easterly component to the ageostrophic wind. Then, I used the command "GEOS" to display the Geostrophic wind, and it was easterly, exactly what I would have expected from the "AGEO" command! Anyone else notice this?

Greg,

Not being 'that' deep into meteorology, I can't say for sure. I followed the code in PCGRIDDS32. If it is a true problem, to fix it, I will need a known good source of information to confirm the information PCGRIDDS32 is calculating and displaying is correct.

BTW - a math equation does not count ;-)

Thanks,
Jeff

PS - did my animation answer solve your problem?
