DA / GeoSatSignal / Import and export image filters

Post by Meteo Maarssen »

Tim,

More users are asking about presets to import GeoSatSignal data into DA. I created a preset setup list for all continents and oceans with settings for DA and GSS to get an identical map setup, so can use GSS basemaps in DA and superimpose any data you wish. I won't say that this must_be_the_standard, but could this be a startup for further discussion between the users, David Taylor and you?

You may view that list on:

http://www.meteo-maarssen.8m.com/producten/MM02.pdf

page two gives that list (English).

There is supported only an internal image file format, I hope that at least the .bmp becomes available too for import and export of images.

With regards,

The requirement (if I understand it correctly) should be really easy to satisfy, as I use standard map projections in GeoSatSignal (e.g. Mercator, Polar stereographic) and specify the projection with width and height in pixels, central parallel and meridian in degrees (ideally integers), and the latitude and longitude span also in degrees.

David

this would be one of the most welcome features , if not THE most welcome.
I gather Ton has all the dimensions worked out , so it should be possible to implement this feature as one can create one basic standard to which both programs would "react " for lack of a better word . I believe David has in the past suggested the "bracknell"chart to be used as the standard projection for im- and exorting between DA and GSS .

I'm about to start working on this. What are the URL's for some of the satellite (and radar) charts you use in Europe? I'd like to test it out with actual products that are favorites by DA users.

I anticipate projection mismatches being the main difficulty, if at all. I am pretty certain the Bracknell charts are mostly polar stereographic while Digital Atmosphere is exclusively orthographic. I may adapt DA to plot other projections, though there hasn't been much in the way of requests for it.

Here's some good info on projections for anyone interested:

Tim,

I would suggest polar stereo and Mercator as being the top priority for new projections. Robert Moore, Ton Lindemann, and Rik Wessels are working together to define the most popular charts, and should have a final list before the end of the week. So far, they have suggested the following, which I have not yet checked out.

Cheers,
David

Hi all,

I agree with David; Mercator and Polar stereographic porjections are much appreciated, and very welcome to exchange data with other programs as well.

Thanks,

Tim,

I'm offering some satellite images from GSS with isobars superimposed by DA on (you should have seen them before):

http://www.meteo-maarssen.8m.com/images/America-c.jpg
http://www.meteo-maarssen.8m.com/images/America-n.jpg
http://www.meteo-maarssen.8m.com/images/America-s.jpg
http://www.meteo-maarssen.8m.com/images/Europe.jpg
http://www.meteo-maarssen.8m.com/images/Atlantic-n.jpg

This can be used for test. I can send also some images without isbars if you wish for tests.

A full list is available at:
http://www.meteo-maarssen.8m.com/achter ... etfoto.htm

But this is in Dutch. Scroll down to wereld weeraltas (World weather atlas) and pick up the map of choice.

That's it,

I hope that importing an orthographic BMP, as already in DA2000, will be possible too. I use this option for importing images from WXtoimg, the program I use for receiving weather satellites. A description with parameters for Europe is available.

Greetings

Fred
