Working with MOS GRIB in PCGRIDDS32

For anyone interested, I have developed a way to work with MOS Grib data in PCGRIDDS32. The grib data are available from the Meteorological Development Lab on their web site at http://www.nws.noaa.gov/mdl/synop/products.shtml.

Here is what you need to do to work with MOS grib data in PCGRIDDS32.

MOS grib has a different set of parameters than that which is found in"regular" model grib data. To work with MOS grib in PCGRIDS32 you will need to create a new GRIBPARM.DAT file. DO NOT DELETE your current GRIBPARM.DAT file!

When you create your new gribparm file for the MOS grib name it something like MOSGRIBPARM.DAT. When you want to work with MOS grib change the name of the current GRIBPARM.DAT file to something like GRIBPARMx.DAT. Now change the name of the MOSGRIBPARM.DAT file to GRIBPARM.DAT. When you want to work with "regular" grib data again, change the names back to what they were.

I developed this file based on the MOS GRIB conversion table available at http://www.nws.noaa.gov/mdl/synop/docs/ ... pgrib2.tbl.

Note: Parameters that are available vary from model to model for which MOS grib is available and the forecast hours for MOS grib are different from that which is usually found in "regular" model grib data.

You can see the forecast hour difference in the following macro I created for PROBABILITY OF 0.01 IN. OF PRECIP (PoP) - every 10 %. For this parameter, the first forecast hour is 18, not 03, 06 or 12.

This macro is for the MOS grib from the GFS model (long range) MEX. This macro would have to be changed to work with other MOS grib.

Great find!! I'll see if I can incorporate the MOSGRIBPARM.DAT into NGRB2PCG32 and trigger using that file for MOS GRIB vs. the regular GRIBPARM file for regular GRIB for the next release. We will have NGRB2PCG32 working with Ensemble GRIB & MOS GRIB. Cool!!
