Scripts for computing Thickness values from RUC

Post by Greg Fishel »

Does anyone know of a way to use scripting to perform calculations on a RUC file? For instance, I have successfully imported the RUC analysis grib file for a given hour. Within that file, the geopotential height at many isobaric levels can be selected. But suppose I want to compute a thickness value from two different levels? I have no problem doing this from actual RAOB data, but wonder if there is a way to do this from the RUC analysis and/or forecast files. Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

How did you successfully import the RUC file and make it work? Site and info would be greatly thankful!

I haven't had any luck with the 40km files, but on the FTPPRD site, I simply download the 80km file(about 1.5mb), and then use the import grib function in DAWS. Here is the path on the FTP site:

ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/ncc ... .20050705/
The file name for this hour is ruc2.t11z.grb2anl

After processing it, it actually indictes the resolution is 60km. For Sea level pressure, I have to use a contour interval of 200, since the units used for SLP are Pascals. Is this helpful?
