Request: Colourfill Thickness Script

Post by Dave Exton »

Happy New Year to all,

Can any Script Experts suggest a script for a 1000-500mb (and/or a 1000-850mb) thikness plots that depict a suggestion of temperature-blue for cold, red for warm, that sort of thing, either by colourfill or by coloured lines?

I did start to get the hang of scripting but at the moment the above is still a bit over my head (did I really just say that? Where else would the above be?!!)

Anyway, If anyone can help I'd be very greatful.

Regards,

Dave Exton, UK.

H1000-500 Script Temp Advection

Dave,

Here is a copy of a script which was posted on the forum some considerable time ago.

Hopefully this may be helpful

Thanks Peter,

I think I missed that one first time around.

I really should be able to have a go at this stuff on my own but it does seem a bit daunting, especially after your first few goes don't quite go according to plan.

Anyway,
Thanks again.

Regards,

Dave.

Hi:

Perhaps there is a way to just show the thickness contours in color fills along with the rain/snow line. If so, I'd be interested in this.

Randy,

It's been a while now since I started this, but I have been working with colour fills to depict relative temperatures on the 1000-500mb thickness chart.

The "snow transition line" has not been shown as a line as such; I've shown it more as a white colour fill (since so many different people seem to have differing opinions about where the transition is shown). If you wanted a "line" contoured it would be easy to add.

Please keep in mind that I'm no expert at this, but I do want to produce a good, useful script if I can. :?

Perhaps you and others would give it a try and send me some feed-back (kind or otherwise).

Here's the script:-

#1000-500mb Thickness using fill colour #
analyze,STOR=3 SDIF=1:2 STOR=2 HGHT H000 STOR=1 HGHT H500
analyze,STOR=3 fill COLOR=0:0:0 fils=0 grtn=4080#to do#

It works for me, 'hope it works for you!

PS I've tweaked my Fog Stability Index sript and it seems to work. You might like to note that although the formulas between Mine and Fred's are slightly different (with different isopleth values) they both give pretty much the same results.
Let me know if you or anyone else would like to see the tweaked version.

Hi Dave,

Thanks, I will test this script out. Yes, if you want to send the fog stability script too, that would be great!

Randy (and any other interested parties!)

Please find tweaked FSI below. The information I started with suggested 20 and less as areas of high radiation fog risk.

Although Fred's equation yields 30 as the critical value, I've found running the two side-by-side, give very similar fog forecasting results.

I'll leave it to a professional meteorolgist to make your own mind up!

Here's the script:-

#Fog stability Index-------FSI=(Surf temp-850mb temp)+(Surf temp-Surf Dew point)+850mb windspeed.<20=High Chance Of Fog#
stor=1 analyze,stor=5 ssum=1:2 stor=2 vknt wspd h850 stor=1 ssum=2:3 stor=2 sdif=1:2 stor=1 temp hsfc stor=2 temp h850 stor=3 sdif=1:2 stor=1 temp hsfc stor=2 dwpt hsfc
analyze,stor=5 ssum=1:2 stor=2 vknt wspd h850 stor=1 ssum=2:3 stor=2 sdif=1:2 stor=1 temp hsfc stor=2 temp h850 stor=3 sdif=1:2 stor=1 temp hsfc stor=2 dwpt hsfc
analyze,over fill color=124:124:124 lsth=5 stor=1
analyze,over fill color=128:128:128 grtn=10 stor=1
analyze,over fill color=192:192:192 grtn=15 stor=1
analyze,over fill color=255:255:22 grtn=20 stor=1
analyze,over fill color=255:255:255 grtn=25 stor=1
analyze,cont equa=20 color=255:0:0 line=2 stor=1
analyze,cont dots cint=5 dash stor=5 ssum=1:2 stor=2 vknt wspd h850 stor=1 ssum=2:3 stor=2 sdif=1:2 stor=1 temp hsfc stor=2 temp h850 stor=3 sdif=1:2 stor=1 temp hsfc stor=2 dwpt hsfc
stamp

I hope it works!!!

Regards,

Dave.

One of the big problems i see with FSI is that you need ROAB data and that is only taken twice a day.. 00Z and 12Z. I think it would be a lot better if you can use better information but right now the only way would be GRIB data sets from RUC2 which isnt avaible for scripting yet!
