MADIS not working?

Post by Wally Mayo »

Anyone else having problems with getting MADIS data (and plotting them)?
This started just a few days ago. I hope it's a temporary problem with them.

The FSU Madis has a good number of stations, but the "big file" is really missed...hope it returns!

New URL - FIXED

Post by Wally Mayo »

OK ... the format has changed a little. So here is the new URL for the BIG Madis file:

http://madis-data.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/text ... &csvmiss=0

You can replace this in your RETRIEVE data URL for Big MADIS NOAA file
However, I recommend you go to this site:
http://madis-data.noaa.gov/public/sfcdumpguest.html

And select the state/area and dataset you want. It makes for smaller files.
For example, I chose Virginia, and selected the meso nets that apply (excluding FL, GA DOTS/nets, etc) choosing the public data like Anything Wx, VDOT, CWOP, etc.
I actually excluded the NOAA Metars since that is ingested and plotted first anyway.
After you run your choices ... save the URL that results. For VA I got...

http://madis-data.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/text ... d=WXforYou

That means I download a 160K file instead of a huge file.

You might want to read restriction of use seen on this page
http://madis.noaa.gov/madis_restrictions.html
I wonder how that may apply to non-government, and profit agencies.

I hope all this is correct. This gets a little complicated.

NOTE: Don't just scroll and capture the URLs above, you have to RIGHT CLICK and choose "copy shortcut" to get the full line of characters (in IE) or RIGHT CLICK and choose "copy link llocation" in some other browsers.
