I am trying to make a contour chart using visibility from SYNOP or METAR observations.

That's good of you. When you say the base map has a 'style' do you mean the actual look of the map, or the symbols that are shown on it?

What I asm trying to do is to load larger symbols for given products and smaller symbols for others.

Anyone know where the WAFs grib files have disappeared to from the NWS ftp site? The files were in octents.

Used to get them direct from tgftp.nws.noaa.gov with files names such as
us008_gf096_05072700_HxICx

Is it possible to import GRIB files automatically by scripting, and to overlay the data by scripting, i.e. making the whole process totally automatic?
