Hurricane Tracks

Post by ncwxman »

Using DAWS V1.1e (registered)

Climatology > Hurricane tracks...

When you plot tracks there is a line that appears to the right of the last position that runs all the way off the work chart. This happens on some storms while not on others. Take for instance 1985. Danny and Elena end clean while Bob and many others do not. I think there may be a problem with the format of the data for these tracks. I want to look at the files but can't find them. On page 68 of the manual it states that "...users are free to swap out the existing tables with fresh ones. The files are located in the /hurr directory." I went looking for this directory in my DigitalAtmosphereWS directory but I have not found it. What file or files should I be looking for?

Thank you,

Kevin

The data is located in the digatmos.hra file in the main directory.

And in digatmos.hrp for the EPAC.

Glad I could provide some help, Kevin! I have also encountered the same troubles with the climatological hurricane track plots. God knows why! I think Tim once said something about a mathematical bug that they knew about?? Don't quote me on that though. May also be DAWS is trying to plot a line as an area???

Pat,

The problem is the the blank fields in the data that occur in the last line of a storm.

For example:

51205 TS
51210 07/21/1985 M= 6 2 SNBR=1092 BOB XING=1 SSS=1
51215 07/21* *2600850 25 1012*2580849 25 1011*2560847 25 1011*
51220 07/22*2560844 25 1010*2580842 30 1009*2600840 30 1008*2620838 35 1007*
51225 07/23*2650834 35 1004*2660829 40 1004*2640823 40 1005*2640811 40 1006*
51230 07/24*2720803 40 1006*2830804 50 1005*2940804 60 1004*3050805 65 1003*
51235 07/25*3160805 65 1002*3290807 55 1004*3480805 45 1006*3660801 30 1009*
51240 07/26*3830795 25 1011* * * *

To "fix" the problem I copied and pasted the data from the last report into the blank fields.

51175 TS
51180 07/21/1985 M= 6 2 SNBR=1065 BOB XING=1 SSS=1
51185 07/21* *2600850 25 1012*2580849 25 1011*2560847 25 1011*
51190 07/22*2560844 25 1010*2580842 30 1009*2600840 30 1008*2620838 35 1007*
51195 07/23*2650834 35 1004*2660829 40 1004*2640823 40 1005*2640811 40 1006*
51200 07/24*2720803 40 1006*2830804 50 1005*2940804 60 1004*3050805 65 1003*
51205 07/25*3160805 65 1002*3290807 55 1004*3480805 45 1006*3660801 30 1009*
51210 07/26*3830795 25 1011*3830795 25 1011*3830795 25 1011*3830795 25 1011*

I hope Tim will be able to come up with a better way to fix this. It would require a lot of time to fix it the way I did!
