GRIB Data for Europe

Post by Stefan Lichius »

Hi All,

I have no experience in using GRIB-Data with DAW-Professional.
I would like to produce maps for europe (pressure, temperature and wind fields). Has anyone make some experiences with it and could be so kind to share it - any help is appreciated.

Hi all,

meanwhile I have found two data sources. From one of these sources I have downloaded the following file "gfs-avn_213_20041217_1200_024.grb" - it`s about 25 MB.
Shortly after importing in DAW-Professional 1.1c I have got a "Range check error". Any idea?

Hi Stefan,

I have been down loading Grib files from this site and they work ok on the Standard DAWS Ver 1.1e. Not sure why you are getting the error reading.

I'd be glad to take a look at it, but I'd have to know the exact URL. The NCEP directories are colossal and it's nearly impossible to find where a certain file might be.

Stefan,

Use this link to download the mrf 201 grid:
http://nomads.ncdc.noaa.gov/data/gfs/200412/20041218/

the files will look like this:
http://nomads.ncdc.noaa.gov/data/gfs/20 ... 00_084.grb

Of course this applies to today's date; you'll need to change it to /20041219/ for tomorrow.

I've imported these into DA WS without trouble.

Hope this helps,

Pat

Stefan,

Try the free MRF 201 grid until Tim can get the higher resolution European AVN grid to work in DA WS. The higher resolution grid is free as well, but it can't be imported, and the 201 does a good job for Europe. At least on a lower resolution scale.

I got it to work inhouse by increasing the number of points per analysis array from 20,000 to 150,000. You'll need 550 MB of disk space to process all this data though.

Really useful stuff. Is it pssible to import GRIB data using scripting, i.e.e not having to click on "IMPORT" etc...?

Thanks,
Simon
