Middle east/asia - Data sets?!

Post by rmaan »

Hi all,

I'm relatively new to digital atmosphere and would just like a little help regarding dataset coverage. I'm a student pilot and using digital atmosphere to produce high level significant weather forecasts. However residing in the middle east (Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates), there doesn't seem to be any data sets that I can download from the interenet that will give me weather coverage for the middle east. I have downloaded METARS from various airports (OMDB, OMAA, OMSJ, OMRK) etc but that seems to be all the raw weather data that I can get my hands on!!

I am in desperate need of some raw weather data for the middle east/asia so if anyone could just point me in the right direction as to where I can obtain data sets for the middle east or other parts of asia/the world I would be extremely grateful.

Thanks in advance for any help,

sincerely

Looks like I had no trouble:

The coverage looks great, though I regret that the U.S. seems to have done nothing to facilitate the free flow of weather data from Iraq and Afghanistan.

You may want to edit the Internet > Resources entries for SYNOP data to change @I to @S, as that will get the 6-hourly rather than 3-hourly data and yield about 4 times as many stations.

Ah thanks Tim, I tried changing the '@I' to '@S' as you said to get more data from the net but I didnt get as many stations as I saw in your screenshot but nevertheless I just imported the hourly metar file from ftp://weather.noaa.gov/data/observations/metar/

Seems very useful and does the trick just fine!! Thanks for all the help again.

Oh I do have just one more question if you dont mind. I have set my preferences to display the IFR and VFR airports as colour coded however all the station plots on my screen seem to be the same and none of the IFR or VFR airports are different colours. Would you know why this is?!

Thanks again for the help,

I need specific examples. Data date/time, station identifier, etc.
