Meso Analysis Smoothing

Post by theonlysilentbob »

Hello, my name is Tom and I am new to this forum however I have been a long time owner of digital atmosphere going way back to the early days.

I don't usually ask for help as I am able to solve most things on my own but the one thing I could never truly accomplish was a proper meso-analysis with extremely smooth lines but very little to no loss of data.

I found these analysis on gentleman’s website (I believe he posted the Planetary Maps) and was wondering what smoothing settings were used to accomplish such outstanding results. The isotherm contouring blew me away literally, it looks almost hand drawn!

I present I use the Cressman analysis type with auto smoothing and a smoothing coefficient of 0.01 and 4 smoothing passes. The results are good but nothing near those attained in the above image.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks![/img]

LOL

I suppose the secret formula is a well kept secret  . I have continued to play around but have still not achieved results even close to those in the above image.

If anyone has some tips regarding smoothing that they would like to post please do so! :D

Barnes, .35, and 2 smoothing passes were used for those; the same as what is used for these two of the Green Bay and Minneapolis areas:

Thank you!

Works very well, not exactly as accurate as the picture but about as close as I have ever seen it lol. Believe me I am not a touch guy to please and this is perfect!

Thanks a ton!

Glad I could help. IMO Barnes seems to do the best job much of the time...especially at smaller scales.

Maybe someday I'll actually keep those maps up to date LOL.

First off, where did you get such great maps to use? I can't seem to find any.

I am, too, trying to duplicate those results and can't see to get them. It either comes out overly smoothed, or the data plots don't fit the analyzed data, etc. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

May it has to deal with having "Automatic smoothing" checked or unchecked, and the options for "Gamma"?

You can try this one for New Jersey if you want:

I'll likely upload a bit better resolution one a little later so it matches the ones for the upper midwest a bit better. Just unzip and use load base map from the map menu.

The settings used are:
Barnes
Automatic smoothing checked
Smoothing coefficient = 0.35
Smoothing passes = 2
Gamma = 0.30

This one is basically the same as the above but it enhances mountain detail a little more and has a few lakes:

Thanks so much. I went to the directory. Is that your personal website?

Just wondering, since I don't want to make you serach or anything... is there a central souce where I get these state-sized maps for other states or are you custom making these?
