Comments and historyDuring the 1950s Alakurtti was suspected by the CIA as being the most likely candidate for development of a major strategic bomber base; this did not occur and Olenegorsk became the primary bomber base. It was home to 4th Naval Bomber Regiment flying Su-24 aircraft. Helicopter services were provided by 85 or 485 OVP flying Mi-24 and Mi-8 helicopters.
