However it has had an important military role since it was built in the 1950s, during which time it has been operated by OGA (Arctic Control Group) as a key staging facility for Soviet bombers to reach the U.S. It is used regularly by Tu-95s in exercises, including one in 1999, in which bombers practice travelling to the Canadian arctic.
