Version 1.1b
Under style-coastline-line thickness
I have tried to increase the coastline thickness of the US, Cuba, Bahamas area. So far no luck. This seems to work for Mexico and other areas.
On an earlier version this worked.
Any suggestions?

Check "Coastline" in File > Preferences > Map > Coastline.

I don't see any problem -- just tried it out and got my thick coastlines to plot. You'll have to make sure Coastline is checked in Preferences > Maps and that you've increased the number in Styles "Coastline" (cst) under LINE. Also make sure you have the latest patch (V1.1c).
