V1.0h patch (THIS IS AN OLD PATCH)

Post by Tim Vasquez »

Digital Atmosphere Workstation Patch V1.0h is now available at:
http://www.weathergraphics.com/download.htm

Changes from V1.0g to V1.0h (6/15/04)

* CONTOURS. The Smoothing settings in File > Preferences > Analysis were being ignored in previous versions, yielding coarse results, especially in the Cressman analysis which was likened to an Etch-A-Sketch. The smoothing settings are now being used, which by default will provide one iteration.

* SOUNDINGS. Vast improvements have been made in the soundings module, including the addition of extremely high-quality diagrams and stability indices. The soundings interface has been drastically improved. Charts contain considerably more detail, along with scales. The soundings interface now includes a Print menu as well as a chart generation interface. The panel gives the ability to plot parcel traces, as well as select between mixed layer, surface based, and most unstable methods. The mixed layer is now determined based on a layer depth set in Preferences > Meteorological. Numerous stability indices have been added to the sounding module, including LI, CAPE, VT, TT, KO, and so on. These will be worked into the horizontal analysis functions. Also a problem was fixed where more data was ingested for a sounding than could be processed, causing the top data points of the sounding to be frequently discarded.

* UPPER AIR IMPORT. Fixed problem where surface portion of RAOB import is not ingested.

* PLOT DENSITY. The plot crowding (density) setting is now saved from session to session.

* DATA PLOT FONTS. One user has said that the fonts are not as readable as they used to be. The fonts can be changed simply by making the appropriate changes in your File > Preferences > Styles table. If this is in reference to the weather symbols, it is true that some of them are less legible. In older DA versions the font was raster-mapped which means it could not be scaled without smearing and "jaggies". The new symbol is Truetype which means it is a vector that can easily be rescaled. If there are individual symbols you think are illegible or appear poorly, please let me know by using QC to "lasso" the station and then tell me what Weather (ww) code is shown. I can take a look at that particular symbol and perhaps adjust it. If something is seriously illegible (besides being too small) you can always send a screen shot.

* COLORED TOPOGRAPHY AND PHOTOREAL TOPOGRAPHY have been brought back and will function much the same as in previous versions. Note that like all geographical overlays you will need to use Copy Markings Onto Basemap to make them permanent with each map. The topography graphics are still a little bit on the crude side still. The photoreal topography can't really be helped since this is just an image bitmap applied to the workchart (in fact if you open digatmos.tfz you can see it, and replace it if you like if you keep the dimensions the same and keep it in BMP format). The originals were jpegs with crappy compression artifacts so if you find a better source let me know. However the colored topography does have room for improvement once I decide on a better way to color the polygons.

* MINOR BUGS AND TWEAKS mostly under-the-hood.

Just a quick one regarding the soundings plotting module- can you post the SKEWBLNK.BMP file to this forum so that we can download it as this seems to be missing from VER H.

Cheers

Tim,

Is there anyway to increase the size of the bitmap file digatmos.tfz. I know you said it needed to remain the same size, problem is with only a 2000x1000 map it is hard to see any relief features on tight zooms. I was thinking maybe a 7200x3600, or larger map would produce better results.

This may be rather hard for you to change????? Hope you can:)

I have discontinued the Photoreal Topography in the next version and added a Map > Import planetary map function that will allow you to use a wide variety of public domain planetary flat maps.
